The activity of retail investors active in equities and ETFs increased further in Q2 2024
Each quarter, the Autorité des Marchés Financiers (AMF) provides an overview of the number of retail investors who have made at least one transaction in a financial instrument during the previous quarter. In the 2nd quarter of 2024, their activity increased, particularly in ETFs.
Listed Equities
During the 2nd quarter of 2024, around 800,000 individuals made buy or sell transactions in shares. A figure that had not been reached since the 1st half of 2022. New investors, i.e. individuals who made at least one share purchase for the first time since January 1, 2018, numbered 56,000 during the period under review, after 59,000 in the 1st quarter of 2024, and 45,000 on average each quarter in 2023.
ETFs
In the 2nd quarter, retail activity continued to increase in exchange-traded funds (ETFs) admitted to trading in Europe: 248,000 investors bought or sold ETFs, 117,000 more than a year ago (+89%). The number of ETF transactions reached 1.2 million, after 1 million in the 1st quarter (+20%).
For the first time, during the 2nd quarter of 2024, the number of new ETF investors reached the number of new equity investors (56,000).
To compile this dashboard, the AMF uses detailed transaction data provided by French financial institutions, as well as the French branches of EU institutions since the entry into force of the European Markets in Financial Instruments Directive, MiFID 2, in January 2018.
