AMF 2024 Barometer: French equity investment intentions remain high
The Autorité des Marchés Financiers (AMF) publishes its annual Savings and Investment Barometer. This latest edition confirms the French public's interest in equity investments, particularly among younger people.
The AMF’s Savings and Investment Barometer measures changes in French attitudes and investment preferences. It particularly follows their appetite for equity investments and investment intentions. This edition took place from September 23 to October 4, 2024. It was used to interview a representative sample of the French population of 2,044 people aged 18 and over.
Intentions to invest in equities
In automn 2024, equity investment intentions were at their highest level since the launch of the Barometer in 2017. The proportion of French people who said they were considering investing in equities within 12 months increased further in 2024, reaching 30% (27% in 2023).
These investment intentions are mainly driven by those under 35. 53% of them plan to invest in equities, compared with 42% in 2023.
High return potential for equities
In 2024, as in 2023, 49% of French people think that the potential return on listed equities is significant. In 2024, holders of listed equities are more likely to think so (65% vs. 55% in 2023), as are younger people: 56% of those under 35 believe that the potential of equity investments is high (43% of those aged 55 and over).
Relations with financial advisers
The AMF Barometer also explores, with new questions, the relationship between financial advisors and savers.
Half of the respondents (51%) feel they have enough advice on saving. Almost all (93%) of those who have received a balance sheet of their savings or advice in the last 3 years believe that the advice provided was appropriate to their situation.
