ETFs: strong growth for retail investors in 2024

Each quarter, the AMF's Active retail Investor Dashboard tracks the number of individual investors who have carried out at least one transaction in a financial instrument. It focuses on transactions in listed equities and ETFs.

Listed equities

In 2024, around 1.4 million private individuals carried out buy or sell transactions in equities, after 1.3 million in 2023 and 1.5 million in 2022. In all, 37.5 million transactions in listed shares were recorded in 2024 by French institutions or French branches of foreign institutions, compared with 37.7 million in 2023.

Over the year, 216,000 new investors were recorded: these were stock market beginners who had made at least one purchase of shares on the stock market for the first time, or investors who had remained inactive since January 1, 2018 and who made at least one purchase in 2024. In five years, from 2020 to 2024, more than 1.2 million individuals invested in listed shares for the 1st time, or returned to the stock market.

ETF

In 2024, some 509,000 retail investors bought or sold exchange traded funds (ETFs) admitted to trading in Europe. This figure is well above the 296,000 recorded in 2023. In all, the AMF recorded 5.2 million ETF transactions in 2024, after 2.8 million in 2023.

In 2024, 246,000 new ETF investors were counted, compared with 98,000 in 2023 (596,000 from 2020 to 2024).

In order to produce this dashboard, the AMF relies on detailed transaction data provided by French financial institutions and branches in France of European Union institutions, since the entry into force of the European Markets in Financial Instruments Directive known as “MiFID2” in January 2018.
