Marie-Anne Barbat-Layani to chair ESMA's Investor Protection Standing Committee

The European Securities and Markets Authority (ESMA) has renewed the governance of its standing committees. It has elected the AMF Chair as chair of its Investor Protection Standing Committee.

Investor protection is one of the key responsibilities of market regulators. During her hearings before the specialised committees of the French National Assembly and Senate, Marie-Anne Barbat-Layani declared her commitment to continuing and strengthening the AMF's actions in this area and to stepping up its educational efforts. She will be following up on this commitment at the European level with the mandate she has just been given by ESMA to chair the Investor Protection Standing Committee as from 1 January 2023.

This Committee brings together experts from ESMA and national authorities, and deals with all matters relating to investor protection, drawing on the experience of the former Investment Protection and Intermediaries Standing Committee (IPISC). Its scope will be broader than that of the IPISC and will cover all issues that have an impact on the protection of retail investors that fall within ESMA's remit, including financial education issues and all aspects related to the distribution of financial products by intermediaries. It may also address issues of convergence and innovation, whether through products or distribution channels, and sustainability, if these issues have an impact on retail investors.
